There’s something about doggy style sex that can feel a little…less than glamourous.

But the all-fours position is popular for a reason: “You can get the deepest penetration possible in this position, and you can also reach the G-spot,” says Ava Cadell, Ph.D., author of Neurolovology.

Plus, Nan Wise, Ph.D., a licensed psychotherapist and certified sex therapist, and author of the forthcoming Why Good Sex Matters, says that without the pressure of staring deep into your partner’s eyes, it might actually be easier to orgasm. “I notice that a number of women find that they’re more orgasmic when they don’t have to worry about their face being seen,” she says.

Luckily, there are plenty of ways to make doggy style feel sexy as hell—even if you’re kind of “meh” about the position at first. But before that, let’s start with the basics.

Okay, how do I pull off doggy style in the first place?

The classic version involves getting on all fours with your partner behind you and on his knees, entering you from behind, says Nan Wise, Ph.D., a licensed psychotherapist and certified sex therapist, and author of the forthcoming Why Good Sex

Other variations include bending over the bed while your partner enters you from behind (more on that below), as well as several changes to your leg and arm positions to change things up. But the gist of it is getting busy with your partner behind you. Now that you’ve got that down, try these tricks to make doggy style sex more pleasurable and less painful (or awkward).

1. Get vertical

The classic doggy style set-up—kneeling on all fours—can feel great for a while, but eventually, your knees start to feel it. “A lot of women complain that they get sore knees, or that it hurts their back or their neck,” Cadell says. Fix that by getting on your feet. Stand up and lean forward slightly against a wall, or bend over onto a table or a desk. Like so:

2. Leave the bedroom

The best part about doggy style is that it doesn’t require a bed. Try it in the shower, standing on a staircase while holding onto the banister, or leaning over the kitchen counter. “My favorite is bending over a dryer that’s on the spin cycle, so it’s like a giant vibrator,” says Cadell.

3. Fluff up a pillow

Skip the traditional doggy style and try this variation to increase your chances of orgasming from intercourse alone (which is rare for most women, Wise says). Get into your classic doggy style position with you on all fours, then put a wedge pillow (or a few firm pillows) under your belly in order to increase external pressure on the abdomen and pelvis, therefore upping the ante on the sensations you get during sex. Lastly, keeping your hips raised, rest your head and arms on the bed. “Almost like a child’s pose,” Wise adds. (It’s kind of like Leap Frog position, but with the added OMG of pillow pressure.)
