Maura Higgins has explained the reason behind her ‘sour-faced’ appearance as the Love Island winner was revealed.
The Irish grid girl had been accused of looking annoyed when Amber Gill and Greg O’Shea were announced as the champions over Tommy Fury and Molly-Mae Hague on Monday night.
And many fans had agreed with her apparent upset, claiming that as the only official couple Tommy and Molly were far more deserving of the prize.
Maura, 28, has now revealed what was really going through her mind as the vote was confirmed.
You know what, I’m not going to lie – I was shocked,” she admitted.
“Obviously, I love Greg and Amber to bits, but I mean, it’s Love Island. Molly and Tommy have found love, it’s genuine love, and I was without a doubt shocked. I thought they had it in the bag.”
She then added: “It is Love Island and they found love.”
Maura then stuck up for her friend Molly-Mae who has been accused of faking her feelings for Tommy for the £50k prize fund.
“I don’t have a clue why – Molly-Mae is the most genuine girl I’ve ever met in my life. She is without a doubt besotted by Tommy, and they’re the perfect couple.”
Following trolls hitting out at Amber and Greg for having only been together two weeks, the winning couple came out with a surprise announcement a day after Monday’s series finale.
Silencing their critics, the pair have made their relationship official.
